lyrics

Life is simple where I come from – I’s born to whistle and hum
I still picture me young like a hymnal that hung
From the top of my lungs on the tip of my tongue

I get lost in these troubled throes -- in the lowest of lows
Hardly noticed, I s’pose, but the thing I fear most
Is not filling these clothes of my childhood ghost

What if I met him one day and we had nothing to say?
Are you doing okay, old pal?
‘Times I must sing out so loud just to drown out the doubt
To do that boy proud somehow
I whistle and hum

Life is simple where I come from -- learned to twiddle my thumbs
When I’s down in the dumps like a pistol-poor son
Bullet riddled and stunned, I still stick to those guns

What if I met him one night and couldn’t spin him those lies?
That it all pans out right like they said?
‘Times you’ll get stranded and stuck on little strokes of bad luck
So just keep your chin up, old friend

Things are bound to turn out in the end, just so
I’ve been down there and back up again, enough to know
So give some hell to my childhood friends and their folks
Wish em’ well from this old ghost

‘Cause ‘times when I’ve come all too close to those lowest of lows
Are the times I love most looking back
What if my childhood dreams, aren’t so wild as they’d seemed?
And like a steam-powered machine down the tracks
I’s born just to whistle and hum
I still picture me young like a hymnal that hung
from the top of my lungs, on the tip of my tongue
that residual hum
Mmm
